Map showing how Wyoming Senate District 6 goes 17 miles out of way to snag a prison and shift an incumbent into a separate district.

Data Source: Wyoming redistricting shapefile, Legislative Service Office. (Map: Bob Machuga and the Prison Policy Initiative, 2012)

This map originally appeared in Intentional Prison-Based Gerrymandering Found In Wyoming.

The proposed districts had two incumbents in District 6. One incumbent had a creative idea: have District 6 extend 17 miles north to include a prison. Adding 499 people at the prison -- plus 261 residents along the way -- to District 6 would push the other incumbent into District 3. With these revisions, the map passed the legislature.
