Sources and methodology
- Geography
- Regions of New York State. These are aggregations of New York counties as more explicitly defined in Figure 7. For the convenience of other researchers, we've included both the "upstate" region and its two components, "upstate urban" and "upstate rural" as separate rows in this table. The rows will therefore sum to more than the state total.
- Percent of state population in region
- Census 2000 Summary File 1, Table P001001. Total Population for the groups of counties.
- Percent of prisoners incarcerated in prisons in region
- This aggregates to the regional level the "prisoners" column in Figure 7 and divides it by the state prison population total of 71,466.
- Percent of prisoners from region
- Department of Correctional Services, State of New York, The Hub System: Profile of Inmates Undercustody on January 1, 2000, table 4, "Grand total" row, and then divided by the "total" column. The two upstate columns were also combined to create an "upstate counties" category.
- Percent of state's Black population is in region
- This aggregates to the regional level the Non-Hispanic Black population in Figure 7 and then divides it by the state Non-Hispanic Black population.
- Percent of state's Latino population is in region
- This aggregates to the regional level the number of Hispanics in each county in Census 2000 Summary File 1, Table P004002 Total population: Hispanic or Latino and then divides that sum by the total Latino population of New York State.
- Percent of Black Voting Age Census population that is disenfranchised in state prison in region
- This aggregates to the regional level the % Black Adults Disenfranchised column of Figure 7.
